6 Biggest Mistakes People Make When Buying a Gutter Guard

1) They Think That Price = Value

Often through advertising, we are conditioned to believe that the more expensive a product is, the better it must be. However, this is not necessarily the case.

Let’s talk about how this applies to gutters and gutter protection. All gutter protection systems are different. There are a ton of different types on the internet, and it can be hard to distinguish which are better than others. Since a lot of big companies in the gutter business have terrible reputations, the next method customers will use to judge the quality is price. They tend to assume that if all companies have a bad reputation, the one with the highest price must be the best, and they use this to justify their purchase.

So how do you keep yourself safe in this industry? You have to think about how your making your decisions. Are you looking at all of the pieces outside of price such as reputation, testimonials, and the information provided to you by the company? If you’re not sure of the price-value relationship, you should value those other pieces of information more. Another way to help protect yourself is the next point on this list: ask the right questions.

2) They Don’t Ask the Right Questions

Questions you should be asking:

  • Why do so many people in my situation think this is so valuable? Why is it worth it to me?
  • What are the consequences of keeping things as they are?
  • What happens to the wet, sloppy stuff that slides off my roof?
  • If you’re claiming your system is maintenance free, how does it clean itself?
  • What are the real problems that I could have even if I choose this system, regardless of the guarantee?
  • What’s the track record of this company in resolving problems when they occur?

Questions you should not be asking:

  • Why does it cost so much?
  • Why not just pay someone to clean my gutters?
  • All these products are basically the same, right?

3) They Get Sold on the Fluff

Often times, people will base their decisions on which salesman they liked most. While doing business with likeable people is nice, it will not shield you from gutter nightmares.

Homeowners do not know much about roofs and gutters, and sometimes, neither do the salespeople. They will tell you what you want to hear to get their commission for selling a product. This does not always end well for the buyer. It is easy to be persuaded to purchase inferior products that may even cost more. Homeowners do not know the differences between products, and that is what makes them so vulnerable.

4) They Think It’s Pretty Much ALL the Same

It is actually quite far from all the same. MasterShield™, LeafGuard, LeafFilter, LeafShield, GutterShield, GutterHelmet, GutterGuard, PineGuard, EasyOn, GutterTopper, etc. are all different products, and they will all tell you that the competition’s product is useless or could even damage your home. NO product is the right fit for everyone. Even at MasterShield, while we do believe that we are the best in gutter protection, we know that our product just won’t work on flat roofs, where other products will. They all make sense for different people for different reasons.

5) They Get Over-Sold

Like I said earlier, salesmen do not know everything about the product they are selling. They all claim that their product is the best, and most of them genuinely believe it. So they will all tell you that their product will fix all your problems forever, and you are likely to believe it because they seem to be honest. The truth is, products almost always under perform the salesman’s expectations. Since the salesman might not be very educated on their product, you should take it upon yourself to do your research, and ask them the right questions. If they don’t know the details of the product, you cannot trust their judgement.

6) They Don't See Gutter Protection as the Investment it Truly Is

A bad gutter system isn’t JUST a bad gutter system. It is a liability to the walls, foundation, and roof of your home. While choosing a cheaper product may save you money, the long term consequences of that decision could seriously affect your wallet and your home. For example, if you make a DIY gutter protection system from materials you bought at Lowe’s, it might work for a little, but will quickly start to deteriorate and eventually fail. Then, you will be forced to spend even more money to replace it, and to repair any damage to your home caused by water overflow.

This is why it is extremely important to just do it right ONCE. While is may cost more initially, it is far less likely to need replacement, and you can relax knowing that your home is safe from damage.
